My 2023 journey began with a simple, yet powerful decision: monthly mentor meetings.

Regular mentor meetings helped me:

  • Land a new role mentoring university business students.
  • Complete a business degree while studying full-time and working.
  • Deliver 5 youth development seminars to the New Zealand Police.
  • Complete a mentoring program with KPMG - one of the "Big 4" accounting firms.

#1. Feeding The Funnel

How could monthly mentor meetings outperform three years of independent goal-setting?

At the start of 2023, my mentor taught me the concept of "feeding the funnel." This is where you put lots of ideas at the top of the funnel and wait to see what comes out at the bottom. It encouraged me to think creatively and opened my mind to new opportunities.

Once I had generated plenty of ideas, it was time to take action.

#2. Accountability = Responsibility

Traditional goal-setting is a slow path to success. Monthly mentor meetings tripled my pace.

  • When you're accountable to a mentor, you commit harder to your goals.
  • This heightened sense of responsibility makes you more focused in your efforts.
  • You work harder because you know someone is tracking your progress and expecting results.

Being accountable to someone gives you extra motivation to work toward your goals.

#3. Adapting And Learning

Like a plant that thrives with the right fertilizer, my goals blossomed after a year of mentor meetings.

The journey towards achieving significant goals was challenging and sometimes lonely. I valued the emotional support and encouragement my mentor gave me during tough times. My mentor's support helped me maintain my momentum and perseverance, especially when facing obstacles.

Having a solid mentor for support helps you adapt and learn as life throws curve balls at you 😊
